ya.. feel free to "wtf?" the title, i don't make topics very often, and my lack of creative names is just one of the reasons why..

Anyways ill get to the point, this is kind of a question type thing to anyone who has a dog... Every time i give my dog a treat she has some weird ritual she does.. she takes it, puts it on the floor and starts to roll on it.. time is ranged between 2-10 minutes for the whole thing, and contains up to 6 rolls about 10-15 seconds per roll.. ( i don't keep count, i just notice she does it a lot, i notice the numbers don't add up, but she also takes short breaks to look at the food to make sure she is actualy rolling on it and not the floor). The way she does it makes it look like she is scratching her back.. i would just throw that in as an answer because im sure rolling on a biscit does wonders for that itch you just can't reach (not that i have tried it or anything). Now i thought that was were it is going to end.. but i was wrong, she now does this with like snacks (kibble from dinner she did not eat) and she will take about 1-3 kibble and rolls on them aswell.

Now don't get me wrong i love my dog but i can't help but worry what guests think when they walk into my living room and see a dog rolling on last nights dinner.. then eating it

I have thought of a few reasons for why she may do this:

1) She has a smell to her and perhaps she likes the taste of the fur on her back she can never reach

2) The sight of food makes her back itchy

3) She is weird

thats all i can think of

Now for the question part, does anyone else have a dog that does this, i have two of the same breed from the same parents (they are aunt/sisters... its a long story) and its only the younger one that does this. So can anyone help me try to find the route behind this weird ritual?

Next time i see her do it i will bolt for my camera and hope i can snap some pictures for proof...

ummm well i'm no animal psychiatrist. i have dogs that do this... never on their food it must be said.
maybe it is because she did it once and you laughed and gave her a pat and so she now associates rolling on her food with a pleased master and a reward.
maybe the food smells strange (to her) and she is showing that it is her food by putting her scent on it.
i don't think it has anything to do with itching... if you have any carpet in the house that is just as effective (i HAVE tried this).

thats all i can think of at the moment... course all dogs have thier own peculiarities: one of my dogs now comes and fetches me if someone calls my name (jumps on me licks me and such like)...

I have seen wierd dogs before, but I must say thats pretty strange....

Yeah - some dogs just have rituals. Maybe she likes to have the scent of food on her. Or maybe it just feels good. If you vigorously scratch her back - is she particularly ecstatic when you reach that one spot?

Some breeds well known for eccentric behavior - My present dog is a border collie, and they're notorious for that. Sometimes he'll plop down and roll on his back for no reason - with his hind legs splayed out, his tail tucked in over his privates and his left foreleg stretched way out. He'd stay upside down like that frozen for a few minutes for no apparent reason. But if I start talking to him he'd just get back on his feet.

I don't know if this is common among other breeds - but when my dog takes a poop - he prefers to go in thick bushes - He'll dive into the bushes and soon only his head will pop out. By the look on his face you can tell what the rest of him is doing. He's the second border collie I've owned - the other one did that, too.

I like dogs. They're nuts.

Dogs are just strange about some things.

Like mine, when I let him out he runs around our flowerbed twice in the EXACT same pattern every time (he's worn down the grass and you can now see the path he takes, it's crazy). He'll then come back to the door wanting to be let in. I'll go to open the door, he'll bark once, then run around the flowerbed one more time, then come in.

Like clockwork, he does it every time.

I once had a cat who had odd eating habits. First of all, he only ate soft-canned expensive food. Secondly, he'd eat by dipping his paw in the bowl and lick it from his paw. He made a mess.

oh ya, she loves that, she always seems to be itchy, she is always scratching something, mainly her ear because she has an ear infection (that never seems to go away dispite hundreds of dollars of meds and vet visits)
